Interestingly the best way we have so far of understanding how the mind works is by studying defects (again, because a functioning mind is superior to a defective one...) Above simply thinking, there must always be reward, punitive results, and motivation. Motivation in humans either comes from pleasant feedback in the past, a frightening feedback in the past, or autonomous things like hunger.

For example, we 'like' touching certain textures, we prefer certain smells. What forms those preferences? Why does touching certain things "feel" good?

Hmm, interesting, but I am very skeptical of that experiment. Far too easy to fake on the participants part. A proper experiment would require the participant not being aware at all that the fake hand was there.
