Quadcopter video streaming with RPi / wifi

Postby rndmplyr » December 15th, 2013, 8:44 am

Hi all,
I am trying to stream video from a Raspi mod B with the camera module attached to my laptop via wifi and want to hook that setup under my quadcopter. I would like to avoid a router between rpi and laptop, so I need one of the two to set up a wifi network. It seems the rpi usb wifi card I use doesn't support AP mode, which led me to set up an Ad-hoc-network from my laptop, but the problem is that the connection is really unstable, also the network needs to be running when the rpi is booting, it can't seem to reconnect when connection is lost and in addition, mplayer which is replaying the stream seems to have its own problems so thats another source for errors. Also, Win8 has removed the gui for ad-hoc-networking, so it needs to be run via command line and you don't see the connection status as easily as normal connections to a router.
Streaming video from the pi to the notebook when both are stationary and if both manage to get connected, runs smooth even @720p with little delay.

Long story short:
Can you help me find a clean and stable solution to connect rpi and laptop?

Many thanks in advance!

( I wasn't sure whether to put this into software or hardware subforum, please move it if you find it more appropiate in another subforum )

What WNIC are you using on the raspi? If you are using the one that generally ships with the combo kits (the thumbnail-sized one), I'd replace it with something bigger. In my latest project, I used a NETGEAR WN111 on the RPI end which increased my range quite a bit. It is Debian compatible, so it was a plug-n-play solution for me. Plus, it'll do ad-hoc mode with the right configuration in /etc/sysconfig.

I'm using one of those http://www.ebay.de/itm/300Mbps-USB-Wireless-WiFi-Adapter-With-External-Antenna/150989632307?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D15813%26meid%3D3417073551697483201%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D7513%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D390720505364%26 based on the Realtek 8191 chipset. It was a hassle to get running right, but sadly ap mode doesn't work on linux with it. For range I'm using a 4 or 5 dBi antenna I swapped with the original smaller, so that's not a problem for now.

Have you tried decreasing the max connection speed? I often get more consistent connections if I negotiate a lower max.

That might be worth a try. I need to wait for the holidays when I'm home to try it, but feel free to post more ideas :)

Does turning on wifi disable data? I have an iPhone 4S and I was wondering if whenever I turn on wifi, does it automatically disable the cellular data? Just wanted to know because it gets too much of a hassle to turn off the data and switch to wifi, and then vice versa.
