Hackable/repurposable USB device with screen and buttons

Postby zorked » October 21st, 2017, 11:44 pm

Hello,

I'm looking for a cheap hackable (as in, use-your-own-software) USB-connected and powered device, with a screen (OLED dot matrix would be great) and a button or two, inside a cute case (like a finished product). Ideally some ARM microcontroller, but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

So far the best devices in that general direction are sports wrist bands such as this:

But I'm not sure these are hackable as I couldn't find anything substantial online (there are dozens of models on Alibaba and Ali Express). I also looked for Tamagochis with a USB port but they seem to come with at most IrDA interfaces.

Also interesting are these $12 dollar phones, which however don't have USB ports, but have Bluetooth (I prefer USB for simplicity).

Unfortunately these seem to not be hackable at all and have weird processors and such. These could work though.

A Yubikey also seems close, but not quite - there is a button, but no screen. Also, pretty expensive.

But both examples are overkill. It feels like something like I want should be available for a few dollars at most. Does anyone have ideas?
