LVDS (touch) screens and connector types for Asus N3050T

Hello All,

I'm planning to build a small handheld box that will serve in the field during video shoots. Cameramen and their assistant's should be able to connect their card readers to a box and offload footage.

For this reason I am looking for a board with USB3 as the speed would be crucial. Because I wanted to keep thing affordable I landed on the Asus N3050T board. It's not small but has USB3 and the capability to add local high speed flash storage as well.

This board also has an LVDS connector on board, but I have exactly zero experience with this connector. Firstly, can I use any type panel without the need of a controller board? Secondly, are all LVDS connectors the same? From what I've read on this forum, they are not'. I've seen them in various shapes and sizes. I checked the manual of the N3050T board but there is no info in there about pin layout for example. Is there any way to know ahead of time what to expect? Here is a picture of the board, the LVDS connector is in the top right corner: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com ... I/A1b4eY...

Here is the manual of the board: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/Int ... nboard/N...

Ideally I would like to add a 7" screen like this one for the raspberry pi: http://www.waveshare.com/product/mini-p ... rry-pi/d...

Ideally also with a touch interface as that would be awesome! I'm planning to run ubuntu on this so the capacitive touch interface from i.e. the waveshare screen could work. (but it has a controller board attached with an hdmi interface.)

Does anyone have any advice on this? I could also use the hdmi output to hook up a screen but that would make things a lot more bulky and fragile (the connector would get stressed during handling).

Many thanks!
Karel.
