Searching 3mm individually addressable RGB LED (eg WS2812)

Postby rene » November 1st, 2015, 10:29 am

Hi,

I'm looking for 3mm individually addressable RGB LEDs.
So that's a normal through-hole round LED housing, not SMD.
I can only find 5 and 8mm versions.

This can be WS2812/NeoPixel, APA102/DotStar, or something else.
Ideally it should be supported by Adafruit's NeoPixel library, or the FastLED library, so I can simply use an Arduino type of controller.
I prefer clear over diffused, but will take anything.
Only a dozen or so needed for the first (and maybe only) experiment.

Any ideas welcome!

Cheers,
Rene

Not sure what your end game is. But assuming you want to pack the RGB LEDs into a 2 dimensional array ... why not just use a color LCD?

I want to connect a 3mm fiber optic to an LED, using a small plastic tube as 'connector'.
So I have a piece of tube with an inside diameter of slightly less than 3mm.
Snug in the LED on one side, and the fiber optic at the other side.

There are professional couplers available, but I'm very space constrained.
Originally I glued a piece of tube on 5050 WS2812B LEDs on a strip, but tubes came loose because of the tension as everything had to be cramped in a small space.
So my next bet is to use individual LEDs.

Still not knowing what you want to accomplish makes suggesting solutions difficult. You could use OLED displays which cram a lot of RGB LEDs into a small space. You could use fewer LED and use software to interpolate the brightness at a given location. You could tombstone the WS2812 LEDs and reduce at least one dimension of the layout. Or get fancy w/the geometry and tombstone them at 45 degrees and try reducing both dimensions.

I have about a dozen optical fibers.
Each fiber needs to be lighted by its own colored light source.

Why? art project.

Here I was thinking you were trying to make an optical print head to lay down patterns on PCBs or photographic paper.

So, there is room for variation and interpretation. Altering the original concept to fit the form of what is available. Have a look at this (which, I'm thinking, is a way to express more color and brightness levels with fewer RGB LEDs):

Possible coupling method to larger LED's:

1: get shrink tubing just large enough to fit over LED,
cut to about 1/2" - 1" longer than LED.

2: shrink it around LED.

3: drop of glycerin on LED in tubing.

4: place 3m fiber in shrink tubing.

5: heat and shrink tubing / LED combo.

6: clean any glycerin leakage.

Using shrink tube to match sizes is an interesting alternative.
Due to the restrictions in available room to stash the LEDs I'd still prefer 3mm LEDs, but if those prove to be non-existent I could try this.

What's the purpose of the glycerine?

better optical coupling - it should have a refractive index close to that of the fiber and the LED's plastic, and a lot better than air.

Ah, makes sense.
Thanks for clarifying.

Ok, looks like I have a plan B when I can't find 3mm LEDs :)
