Arduino Mega or 2560?

I'm wanting to get a mega, just for the pins. However, there are two variants. Looking at the Arduino site, I don't see hte difference. Can someone outline the differences and provide a bottom line as to which is better?

Mega2560 is what the mega's should be now, the only difference is more rom and the updated USB<> serial interface. Which to get? doesnt really matter, but unless your getting a steep discount on the MEGA (1280) I would just get the newer board
