Christmas gift help - robotics kits for kids

Postby samster2.0 » November 26th, 2012, 11:09 pm

I'm wanting to get my 12yo son into robotics, but the $240 - $270 for the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is out of my price range (see: http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-4544091-Mind ... B001USHRYI) is the cheapest I can find.

The 'brain' of the NXT 2.0 kit is $150 alone (from Lego), but my ideal kit would be a NXT 2.0 kit or a similar complete kit along those lines for ~ $150.

I've thought about the NXT 1.0 (the Lego RIS kit), knowing its obsolete and I'd have to grab a used one from ebay.
I've also seen this http://littlebits.cc/ which is heavy on the electronics but not so much on the robotics.

I'm looking for something that will have a software/programming aspect to it and a hardware/mechanical aspect to it - for techie/geeky kids :geek: .
Not interested in the little battery operated kits that make walking acrylic six legged turtles  - he's done those and is bored with them.

Suggestions?
Thanks,
Samster

I found this searching under "toy car" and "programmable car" on the main website:
