Theoretical E-Bike

I know that there have been other e-bike threads before this, yet I didn't find one that had asked this, so here comes another one.

I plan on getting a motor, a battery and a potentiometer and sticking it on a bike. When the potentiometer is turned on, the motor goes and assists in powering the bike (I'm pedaling at the same time, it's just to make it less effort/go faster), then when the potentiometer is turned off, the motor would still be turning due to the bike still being in motion, effectively turning it into a generator. I want to use that energy to charge the battery while it is not in use, hopefully meaning it needs recharging less. My concern is back emf, however I'm not sure if I need to be or not.

Would that circuit work for what I want to achieve??
