List of alternative to Hackaday

Postby UAirLtd » July 18th, 2013, 10:01 am

It is sad to see the situation Hackaday is currently in (for those from the future, this: http://hackaday.com/2013/07/15/were-goi ... -hackaday/), I don't think the valuation is correct, and I don't think that asking the community to foot the bill for basically no return is right either. But there's plenty of people already complaining about it already, all with excellent explanations of why this is not right, so I won't spend more time talking about it here. Ultimately it's the individual's choice to decide whether it is worth it to them to donate to the indiegogo campaign.

Anyway, I'll still be hanging aroud here, but in the event that Hackaday disappears, I've been looking for alternatives to get my daily hack fix. I see several people who have set up their own site in response to this situation, filling what might potentially be a void left by Hackaday if things don't go their way (prematurely perhaps, but the internet is big enough). I'll be dipping my toes in, maybe finding a site with a fledgling community that I can join at an early stage and be part of something that may develop into a site like Hackaday (or it might not and disappear into irrelevance into the bowels of the internet, who knows).

Scouring through the comments, so far it seems like these:

I will be seeing if there's any way I can help out at ModThat. Anyone know of any others?

Long time HackaDay reader and lurker on the forums here.

I started a website last year in December that I finally got around to opening up again a few days ago. It is an online community for geeks, anime fans, gamers, diy/hacks/modding. There isn't much on it as of right now. But it does have a blog, forums, and a wiki. Anyway, http://system512.com/

Pretty much how I came up with System512 is because there are some forums and online communities that I like, but they pretty much cover one or a few things. I didn't really wanted to join all different forums to talk about this or that. So I thought to myself, hell, why not have a forum that will cover everything that other people and me like.

It is not an alternative but maybe you'd like the hacks and gadgets on my site http://www.doityourselfgadgets.com. I'm new to the forum so if this post does not fit I'll delete it :)
